Language Requirements for JLT

  • Japanese: Students must be able to read, write, understand, and pronounce Hiragana and Katakana fluently before arrival.

  • English: Recommended proficiency equivalent to TOEFL iBT® 71 or higher, as some elective courses may be offered in English.

No certificate submission is required.

KGU-Sponsored Scholarships

  • Exchange students may apply for a scholarship through KGU when submitting their exchange application.

  • Successful applicants are usually notified about a week before arrival in Japan, though in some cases, notification may come after arrival.

  • Please note: The number of available scholarships has decreased in recent years. Students should not rely on receiving a scholarship and must plan to cover all expenses independently.

Student Support

  • KG Buddies: Local volunteers who help exchange students adjust to life at KGU.

  • Global Student (GS) Network: Provides orientation support and organizes cultural activities.

Estimated Monthly Cost of Living

  • Program Fees: ¥ 4,000 per semester (includes KGU Insurance Pack and Support Pack)

  • Accommodation:

    • Dormitory:  ¥ 240,000–¥650,000 per semester

    • Homestay: . ¥ 400,000–¥500,000 per semester
      (Actual costs vary by housing type and duration.)

  • Food: ¥ 40,000

  • Books: ¥ 7,000

  • Miscellaneous: ¥ 20,000

  • Health Insurance: ¥ 3,000

Tuition Fees

No tuition fees for the Exchange Program if nominated by an exchange partner institution.

Application Period

  • Fall Semester: 1 March - 15 April

  • Spring Semester: 1 October - 15 November

Contemporary Japan Program (CJP)

  • There are two study tracks available within the CJP.

  • Exchange Students can choose one of the following study tracks: 

  1. Japanese Language Track, for students who wish to focus on their Japanese language studies

  2. Modern Japan Track, for students who wish mainly to learn about Japan via English-taught courses through a variety of subjects.

Language Requirements for MJT

  • Japanese: Not required.

  • English: Students whose native language is not English should have proficiency equivalent to TOEFL iBT® 71 or higher.

Course Load and Credits

  • Exchange students are required to take at least 10 hours of classes per week (equivalent to about 7 class periods).

  • Each course credit equals 22.5 hours for language courses or 11.25 hours for lectures and seminars.

  • Students may register for up to 24 credits per semester.

Transcripts

  • Official transcripts are sent to the home university after the exchange (Spring: Early September / Fall: Early March).
