Campuses

• The study abroad program is mainly offered at the Hakusan Campus, home to the Faculties of Letters, Economics, Business Administration, Law, Sociology, Global and Regional Studies, and International Tourism Management.

• Other campuses include Akabanedai, Kawagoe, and Asaka, though these are not available for exchange students

Academic Calendar (Provisional)

Toyo University’s academic year is divided into two semesters, Spring and Autumn, and four quarters.

• Spring Semester

  • 1st Quarter: April 9 to June 10

  • 2nd Quarter: June 11 to August 5

• Autumn Semester

  • 3rd Quarter: September 19 to November 20

  • 4th Quarter: November 21 to January 31

Eligibility

• Students enrolled at one of Toyo University’s partner universities, or through ISEP Exchange or UMAP Program A.

• Students must remain enrolled at their home university throughout their study period at Toyo.

• Total study duration at Toyo (including any past exchange) must not exceed one academic year.

• Minimum GPA: 2.5/4.0 (Partner Universities) or 3.0/4.0 (ISEP / UMAP).

Important Considerations

• Students requiring special accommodations or learning support should contact Toyo University early in the application process.

• Exchange students may be affiliated with a different Toyo faculty than their home department, but this does not affect course selection.

• Once submitted, the study period cannot be changed.

• Students must return home within two weeks after the program ends; visa conditions do not allow internship or post-study work.

Number of Courses to be Taken

• To maintain a student visa in Japan, exchange students must take at least 7 classes per week (equivalent to 10 hours of coursework).

• There is no maximum limit on the number of courses students may enroll in.

Available Course

Study abroad students can take classes depending on their language ability:

• Japanese-taught courses: JLPT N2 or above (or equivalent)

• English-taught courses: English proficiency of CEFR B2 or above (or equivalent)

• Japanese Language (NEST) courses: For students with basic Japanese skills (Hiragana and Katakana mastery required)

Students may choose from a wide range of subjects in the Faculties of Letters, Economics, Business Administration, Law, Sociology, and more.

Academic Transcript

• A PDF copy of your Toyo University academic transcript (PDF) at Toyo University will be forwarded to your home institute by email or by postal mail after you complete the study abroad program. (About one and a half months after completion.)

AI-House HUB-4

• Address: 1-7-37 Akabanedai, Kita-ku, Tokyo (about 35 minutes from Hakusan Campus)
  Period of Stay:

• 1 Semester – March 23 to August 8, 2026

• 1 Year – March 23, 2026 to February 10, 2027
  Monthly Fee: 98,500 JPY (includes rent 96,000 JPY and bedding rental 2,500 JPY)
  Room Type: Single rooms with shared kitchen, shower, and toilets
  Included: Breakfast and dinner on weekdays, electricity, water, heating, and Wi-Fi
  Facilities: Lobby, cafeteria, shared kitchen, laundry room, study room, and music studio
  Support: Resident managers and security staff; Resident Assistants organize activities
  Commuting: Approx. 11,860 JPY for a three-month student commuter pass

Meals

• Campus cafeterias offer affordable meals for about 580 JPY, open Monday to Saturday (except during holidays and long breaks).

• Many convenience stores, restaurants, and supermarkets are also located near Hakusan Campus.

Student ID Card

• Issued upon arrival, this card allows access to Toyo University libraries, PC rooms, and student discounts for transport and museums.

Part-time Work

• Exchange students may work up to 28 hours per week with official permission from immigration. However, income from part-time work is not sufficient to cover all living costs.

Arrival & Orientation

• Designated arrival dates for exchange students: March 23–26, 2026.

• Students must arrive on these dates and attend the mandatory orientation, which covers university registration, immigration procedures, health insurance enrollment, and daily life guidance.

Tuition Fees

No tuition fees for the Exchange Program if nominated by an exchange partner institution.

Application Deadlines

• Semester 1: 8 October -  21 October

• Semester 2: 11 March - 23 March

Vacation Period

• Spring Semester: April 28 to May 3, August 6 to September 18

• Autumn Semester:  October 31 to November 6, December 23 to January 3, January 12, January 16 to 17, February 1 to March 31

Language Requirements

• Applicants must be able to read and write hiragana and katakana.

• One of the following is required:

  • JLPT N3 or higher, or

  • English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B2 (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, or equivalent).

• Students from universities where English is the medium of instruction are exempt from English test submission.

Credit System

One credit is given for 45 hours of coursework, including class time and self-study.

• Lectures/Seminars: 30 hours of class and 60 hours of preparation and review (2 credits)

• Foreign Language Courses: 30 hours of class and 60 hours of preparation and review (1 credits)

• Experiments/Exercises/Practices: 45 hours of class only

Note: 45 minutes equals one hour, so a 90-minute class counts as two hours. Courses under NEST (Integrated Japanese) and LEAP (IELTS for Study Abroad) are worth 2 or 4 credits each.

Consultation for Courses

Students can consult with an academic advisor at the beginning of their exchange
program regarding academic expectations and the higher education culture at Toyo.

Grading & Credits

• Students receive grades for each registered course based on attendance, assignments, and exams.

• Grades range from S (Excellent) to E (Fail). A minimum of C (60%) is required to pass.

• Credits are awarded only for courses with a passing grade.

Housing Overview

• Exchange students may stay at Akabanedai International House (AI-House HUB-4) or Kokusai Kaikan / International House (I-House).

• Applications open in November. If applications exceed the number of available rooms, placement will be decided by lottery.

• ISEP, CIS Abroad, and KEI students are required to live in AI-House HUB-4.

• Students may also arrange private housing or stay with relatives.

Kokusai Kaikan / International House (I-House)

• Address: 3-2-4 Sendagi, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo (15 minutes on foot from Hakusan Campus)
  Period of Stay:

• 1 Semester – March 23 to August 8, 2026

• 1 Year – March 23, 2026 to February 10, 2027
  Monthly Fee:

• Single room 83,500 JPY (rent 81,000 JPY + bedding rental 2,500 JPY)

• Shared room 53,500 JPY (rent 51,000 JPY + bedding rental 2,500 JPY)
  Included: Electricity, water, heating, and Wi-Fi
  Facilities: Lobby, multipurpose room, kitchen, laundry
  Support: Resident managers and Toyo Resident Assistants (RAs)
  Commuting: No commuter pass required (walking distance to Hakusan Campus)

Health Insurance

• All exchange students must enroll in Japan’s National Health Insurance (NHI), costing about 1,900 JPY per month.

• NHI covers 70% of medical expenses. Students are also advised to hold travel or health insurance from their home country for additional coverage.

Bank Account

• Students can open a Japanese bank account after arrival (takes about two weeks). Bringing a credit card from home is recommended.

Visa & Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

• Exchange students must obtain both a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and a student visa before entering Japan.

• Toyo University applies for the COE on the student’s behalf once all required documents are received.

• The COE process usually takes 2–3 months.

• Once issued, the COE and Letter of Acceptance will be used to apply for a visa at the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate.

• Financial Proof: Applicants must show funds of at least 150,000 JPY per month (bank statement or scholarship certificate).

Estimated Monthly Cost (Excluding Housing)

• Meals: 50,000 JPY (AI-House includes weekday breakfast and dinner)

• National Health Insurance: 1,900 JPY

• Phone/SIM: 3,000 JPY

• Transportation: 5,000–10,000 JPY
   

Students should bring at least 150,000–200,000 JPY in cash for their first two months in Japan.
