Undergraduate exchange students take Common Courses (Japanese language, Japanese affairs, and traditional industries) in Japanese, along with Specialized Courses in English offered by the School of Education, School of Engineering, and the School of Global and Community Studies.

• International students are required to take at least 10 hours/week of courses to maintain their student visa status. 10 hours/week is equivalent to 7 courses (about 14 credits).

• A Transcript of Record will be issued for exchange students who enroll in UF as Special Auditing Students to confirm their courses completed, grades, and credits earned.

Students must purchase overseas travel insurance before leaving home. The coverage should begin from the departure date and extend at least two weeks after arrival in Fukui.

• UF requires all International Students to purchase Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (PAS) and Liability Insurance coupled with PAS.

• These plans give insured students compensation for physical injuries as a result of unexpected accidents, and cover damages for which, insured students may be held legally liable to pay for injuring a third party or damaging any property during their educational and research activities, including commuting time.

3. UF Student Dormitory (Japanese & International Students)

• Cost: 6,800 JPY/month (communal charge included; excludes electricity, gas, water)

• One-time cleaning fee: 20,000 JPY

• Washing machine: 100 JPY/use, Shower room: 100 JPY/use

• International students are allowed to have a part-time job if he/she has a work permit from the immigration office, supervisor, and Int’l Affairs Division.

• The students can work up to 28 hours per week.

• In order to obtain the work permission, the students must maintain the good academic performance.

• No tuition fees for the Exchange Program if nominated by an exchange partner institution.

• Your home university officer completes and signs the Nomination Sheet, then sends it to the University of Fukui by email.

• Applicants prepare the required forms and documents (see Application Guidelines) and submit them through the online application system to their home university officer, who will forward them to UF.

• Each class is 90 minutes long (2 class hours) for 15 weeks per semester plus 1 week of final examinations, and mostly 2 credits.

• 1-credit courses categorized as lecture contain content that require 15 class hours and 30 learning hours.

• For courses categorized as seminar or basic language course (e.g. Japanese language courses), one credit contains content that requires 30 class hours.

• The student's home university will determine whether or not they are able to transfer the credits.

• Every person living in Japan, including foreign nationals, must have health insurance. The premium is about 19,000 JPY per year.

• Accidental Death – 10 million JPY

• Medical & Rescue Expenses – 30 million JPY

• Sickness Death – 10 million JPY

• Personal Liability – 100 million JPY

• Inbound insurance covers personal liability, death and residual disability, rescuer expenses, medical expenses, and tenant’s liability.

• Those who will reside in the university dormitory are required to purchase this insurance. We strongly recommend to purchase it as well as those who reside in an apartment.

• Submit the Application for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) in Excel format with other documents to UF (use the checklist before submission).

• After your acceptance, UF applies for your CoE on your behalf.

• UF sends the CoE to your home university once issued by the Immigration Bureau.

• Apply for a Student Visa at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your country using the CoE and other required documents.

• You must obtain a Student Visa before departing your home country/region.

• All international students are required to attend orientation sessions where students will learn: how to register for courses, about UF academic and administrative systems, and useful information about daily life in Japan. They will also complete necessary procedures (resident registration, bank account, insurance, etc.).

• Therefore, international students are asked to arrive in Fukui before the orientation week.

• The University of Fukui Bunkyo Campus has 3 student dormitories.

• Since the number of dormitory rooms is limited, there is no guarantee that a room will be provided for all exchange students.

• The applicants will be notified whether they will be provided with a dormitory room or not when they receive a Letter of Acceptance.

• For students who are not provided with a dormitory room, UF will provide apartment information near campus and support them to secure a room before coming to Japan.

2. UF Overseas Students House (International Students Only)

• Cost: 10,200–17,400 JPY/month (communal charge included; excludes electricity, gas, water)

4. Private Apartments (FYI)​

The University of Fukui will give as much support as possible for those wishing to reside in an apartment.

• Minimum rent: 25,000 JPY/month

• A deposit of 2–3 months’ rent is usually required at contract signing

• Washing machine: 100 JPY/use, Shower room: 100 JPY/use
