On November 13, 2024, I joined the Loy Krathong festivities at Assumption University’s Suvarnabhumi Campus—a beautiful mix of Thai tradition and community.
The day started with a DIY Krathong-making session at 1:00 p.m., where students kindly guided me in crafting my own Krathong, adorned with candles and flowers as a symbol of respect to the water goddess.
The festival began officially at 4:30 p.m., marked by the rhythmic beats of Thai drums and a welcoming speech from Rev. Bro Dr. Monthol Prathumarach, Vice President for Special Affairs. Cultural performances filled the evening, adding joy to the atmosphere. When I finally floated my Krathong on AU’s lake at sunset, the candle-lit water created a truly magical scene.
Even though I’ve lived in Thailand for over two years, this was my first time truly experiencing the Loy Krathong Festival with others. I’ve learned that for many young people in Thailand, Loy Krathong has a romantic side—it’s common to see couples and friends gather to float their Krathongs together. Seeing the joy around me, I felt a sense of warmth and belonging that made this festival even more special.
